When applying for The Biggest Loser I knew that if I made it through that I would be in for a pretty brutal time. I was happy enough to accept this because I knew this was going to be my very last attempt at weight loss, either through success or realising and accepting that I was meant to be obese. Luckily for me one of the first things I learnt as I started training was that there is no master plan. Only the plan we actually play out every day. Contrary to popular belief we have the ability to choose our own destiny. Now I say that in regards to our weight but also in everything we do. What really stopped me from achieving my goals and reaching my dreams was me.
With the help of Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper I began to realise two things from the very first day. One was that the above was true and they were going to help me to see that and secondly nothing could have prepared me for the experience I was about to have.
I had convinced myself that my body was built for comfort and not for speed. The Biggest Loser set out to prove otherwise. I was at the point in my life where I was willing to actually help them rather than fight against what I really needed.
The training was like nothing I had ever encountered. Most of the training sessions were made up of circuits. While there were 6 of us on each team with the one trainer he still made it worth our while as we all listened and watched each other get pounded. I was under Jillian’s wing at the beginning of the series which was perfect for me as I truly felt that I had connected with her from the very first moment I met her. She inspired me so much I wanted to learn what she had to teach me. The sessions were mainly cardio work on the machines; treadmill, bike, rower or elliptical machine followed by a hammering of floor work in pairs for half an hour. This came in the form of crunches, burpies, star jumps, skipping, push ups, mountain climbers, sit ups, chin ups, squats, lunges, step ups, sprints, curls, side raises with very little rest in between. We also had to do cardio machine work on our own for at least three hours each day.
The main focus and idea of the training was to get our heart rates up and maintain them as high as safely possible for as long as we could so that it would burn off as many calories as possible.
As the weeks passed the intensity increased as our fitness became remarkably greater as did the amount of time we spent with the trainers. The time had come to leave the house and I was eliminated, I felt that physically I was a totally different man and I knew what I had to do to keep going. The one thing that frightened me about being on my own at home was the fact that The Biggest Loser had given me something during my twelve weeks of training that I had never received before and that is what I think helped me through it. They gave me a support group, although we were competing for a prize at the end, it was all about twelve people who were fighting the same battle. Although for some of us it was not as much a life long battle as it was with me, it was still the same battle none the less. After leaving The Biggest Loser house my fear of losing support come true, I had a lot of battles and obstacles to overcome and it really seemed like the world was against me, or at least trying it's hardest to get me to chuck it in. I met Ray Kelly, had support from my wife Sam and my daughter Odessa (I thank both for all of eternity) so I carried on. Things were tough inside the house, but they weren't much easier out! I couldn’t afford for it to be easier, I realised once I had left the house that I would have to make it solely about dropping the kilo’s so I began running. I really loved Ray’s style of training as it was always enjoyable and I think Ray’s attitude to training, his respect and befriending of me helped a lot as well.
